I recently got an email from a prospective Head Football Coach asking me to evaluate his resume. Two bullet points in, I recognized immediately that he used Chat GPT to write it. I stopped reading it, and asked him that in an email. He then said “How could you tell?”
It’s very easy for someone who uses Chat GPT to help me with a variety of tasks in my “day job” as a Principal to recognize “Chat GPT language.” I love Chat GPT! I’ve used it to help me: write grants, fill out justification of fund usage documentation, letters of recommendation, emails, meeting agendas, and more! It really is a great tool.
However, if you are simply putting your current, boring resume in to the Chat GPT machine, and expecting it to create what we do for our clients, a National Champion resume that is unlike every other coaching resume out there, you will be disappointed.
Yes, if you are looking for an EASY way to write your resume, use Chat GPT. If you are looking for a QUICK way to write your coaching resume, use Chat GPT. If you are looking for an INEXPENSIVE way to brand yourself with your resume, use Chat GPT.
Just over 700 coaches just like YOU have invested close to $100,000 in our resume development since 2012! I use many years of experience as a Head Coach, Athletic Director and High School Administrator to craft an amazing, eye catching resume that will help to get you into that “YES, Interview This Coach” pile.
Nobody in America has consulted more coaches on their job search than I have over the last decade! Nobody in America, and probably the world, has written more about the job search process for coaches. Heck, I wrote a book called The Head Coach Blueprint all about the job search for coaches. Here is an article I wrote about “4 Pieces of Advice For Your Resume.” You can find more that I’ve written at CoachFore.org.
“I reached out to Coach Fore a few years ago for help with my resume. After playing in the NFL for 6 years I had no idea where to begin on a resume. Coach Fore took the time to help put my resume together, which helped me land an Offensive Coordinator position in high school. He’s truly professional in the work he does and will take great pride in helping you get a coaching job.” – NFL Veteran and Super Bowl Champion Carey Davis
Here are five reasons why you might not want to rely on Chat GPT for writing your resume:
1. Generic Language
ChatGPT usually generates resume content that lacks a unique, personalized voice. It’s generic. It might produce standard phrases that don’t fully reflect your individuality, which can be a drawback since hiring managers value authentic expressions of your experiences. This right here is the “special sauce” of our resume building, and is the number one way that we help coaches get interviews with their resume.
2. Limited Knowledge of Nuances
ChatGPT doesn’t have intimate knowledge of your industry or specific job nuances. The coaching field has VERY specialized language and jargon, achievements that require deep understanding, or subtle differences in skills, ChatGPT will usually miss these important details. Your resume will read just like every other coach’s resume in America. It will not scream “Interview me!”
3. Overly Polished Text
AI-generated text might appear too polished or overly “scripted,” making it look as though you haven’t directly written it. This could be a red flag for recruiters who want to see your unique style and thought process. And this is exactly what I saw in that coach I referred to earlier. It didn’t sound like a coach writing that resume. AND, it didn’t really sound like a very good coaching bullet point.
4. Inflexible to Personal Insights
ChatGPT may not capture personal insights or the “why” behind your career choices and achievements. This deeper context, like the motivation behind a career shift or personal growth from specific roles, is often what makes a resume truly compelling and memorable to employers. Again, our secret sauce, and what our clients have repeatedly told us about our service is just how personal the resumes are. We are able to portray how YOU have made a dynamite impact on your athletic program, and the community. Generic bullet points get your resume straight to the “No pile.”
5. Lack of Context for Achievements
ChatGPT may struggle to properly prioritize or contextualize certain experiences or achievements. This could result in a resume that doesn’t fully highlight what makes you stand out in the way you’d like. Most coaching resumes are the same! They list their job titles, and their job duties. Yours is probably the same boring resume as most coaches in America. Without telling a story, your resume will not capture the attention of the reader.
